So let’s talk about Latency… what does that mean?
Latency is the time between the cue and when the behavior begins. It’s measured in units of time, like seconds or milliseconds. So latency is how long it takes from when you see the light turn Red until you step on the brake pedal. It is not how long it takes the car to stop.
In a dog training example, latency describes how long it takes the dog to begin the action of sitting when he hears you say “sit”. The important part to remember, is that latency is time between the cue and the initiation of the behavior… the first weight shift. Not the time it takes him to get his rear on the ground, which is the completion of the behavior.
In this episode, we also talk about the factors that can affect latency, and somethings to think about in your training if you want to improve the latency of your behaviors.
